Oscars: Post TIFF Oscar Predictions

The festivals aren’t quite over yet. The New York Film Festival will kick off with Robert Zemeckis’ “The Walk” on the 25th. Meanwhile, in this comforting interlude, we decided to go ahead and give our predictions a much needed makeover after these past revealing weeks.

What have we learned?

  • “Spotlight” is the real deal
  • Kaufman’s “Anomalisa” will rival “Inside Out.”
  • “The Danish Girl” was good, but with some lukewarm response.
  • “Beasts of No Nation”  and “Steve Jobs” are strong contenders, but are not likely are winners.
  • “The Hateful Eight” test screened to strong reactions, has an intermission “Gone with the Wind” style.
  • “The Martian” sounds like a strong crowd-pleaser, should nab some tech attention.
  • “Sicario” is a strong sleeper pick, as is “Son of Saul.”
  • “Room,” after a strong couple of showings, will likely earn Brie Larson an actress nomination.
  • Cate Blanchett will rival Cate Blanchett after two strong performances in both “Carol” and “Truth”
  • “Suffragette,” “Freeheld,” “Our Brand is Crisis,” and “I Saw the Light.” all fall off quite a bit after low to mixed responses.

Oscars: Updated Predictions – July

With the new, stunning list of films premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, we thought it was about time we go through and update our Oscar Predictions.

Truthfully though, not much has changed. “The Revenant” still looks strong, The Weinstein Company still has “Carol” and “The Hateful Eight.” “Star Wars” seems like it could nail a lot of the technical categories along with Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies.”

Once TIFF and Telluride kick off we will have a whole new enlightenment on what is to come, but for now here are our best guesses:

And remember, keep visiting our Oscar page for frequent updates.

We still have only movie categories predicted. For a reflection of what the television categories may look like check out our Emmy Predictions.

“The Danish Girl” and “Snowden” really appear to be in a strong position, with newly added award season release dates. Meanwhile in the, very scarce (as usual), comedy categories “Ricki and the Flash” seems baity enough to bring Meryl Streep her next Golden Globe.
