Film Preview: Joe Cornish to direct “Star Trek 3”

Deadline has reported that Paramount and Skydance Productions is “sweet on” Joe Cornish to direct “Star Trek 3.”

Joe Cornish made his directorial debut in 2011 with “Attack the Block,” an independent sci-fi comedy, that scored him a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding Debut by a British writer, director , or producer. It also scored a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 75 on Metacritic.
Along with that credit, Cornish was also one of the writers for Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin” an animated feature in 2011. He is also currently collaborating with Edgar Wright on the screenplay for “Ant-Man.”

Cornish wouldn’t be the first director to jump from a small-budget success to direct a blockbuster franchise installment. Earlier this year, it was announced that Colin Trevorrow, who made his directorial debut with “Safety Not Guaranteed” in 2012, would be directing and co-writing “Jurassic World.”

“Star Trek 3” lost Abrams as a director earlier this year when he decided to reinvent another legendary franchise. Cornish is an inspired choice who successfully tackled sci-fi/action on a low-budget; so it’ll be interesting to see what he can make of “Star Trek 3.”
