Film Review: Snow White and the Huntsman

Kristen Stewart is Snow White and Charlize Theron is the evil queen in Snow White and the Huntsman. If you are like me, at this point you are pretty burnt out on Snow White adaptations. The reason people re-adapt fairytales so often is because they are fair game to adapt, well most of them at this rate.

With production companies profiting from the tween audiences combining elements of fantasy and romance, they can’t lay their hands off this material. Who can blame them? It’s making them a hell of a lot more cash than I will ever make.

So, before I digress into a rant about the industry and blockbuster formula, I will talk about this particular film. This film tells the story may be a bit misleading on the outside, there really isn’t much to the romance here except for the occasional smile/glance. It’s almost like the concept of Snow White being with the Huntsman was formed by teen audiences then the filmmakers fought to make it subtle.

Of course in the story of Snow White there is love, there is that one magical kiss. I would call this re-imagining of Snow White successful in its approach. It’s hard to explain, I guess what I’m trying to say is this is a blockbuster film that does most things right.

I was never bored, I was invested in the characters (not to great lengths, but still), and that’s not easy to do considering I’ve heard this story several times and the unique twist this film provides is very minor and actually keys out a good deal of the gooey romance.

The one thing I really disliked was the CGI in this film, it was hokey and unimaginitive. The action sequences were impressively choreographed though and I enjoyed seeing Charlize Theron and Hemsworth’s performances. Stewart was good, but expendable.

Final Score: 3/5
