Late Film Review: The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

I haven’t seen McConaughey in a film in awhile now. I did start Fool’s Gold but for the life of me I couldn’t finish it. Maybe I’ll continue it at a later date (very doubtful.) One film he is that I am bias about is We Are Marshall mainly because I grew up in Huntington, WV and know some of the people the characters are based on.

The reason I’m starting this review talking about McConaughey is because he is surprisingly very welcome in this movie. It seems he has learned to stop talking out the side of his mouth. The Lincoln Lawyer is pretty typical under courtroom drama standards. However what helps the film is McConaughey’s lead performance and the sound style of the filmmaking itself.

In most courtroom dramas, there is a twist, it’s almost inevitable. The twist that exists in this film can be easily predicted, or it could surprise you. Depends on the type of movie goer you are. Are you the kind that sits down and immediately tries to outsmart the writers? Or do you just stare at the screen and let it flow through your brain seemlessly?

I watched this film via Instant Netflix, and as far as Instant Netflix standards it was pretty good. I was fully entertained, and never bored. From a filmmaker perspective I had admiration for some of the cinematic sequences involving the crimes and tension. The ending feels a bit cluttered, but all in all it was a worthy Sunday night movie experience.

Final Score: 2.5/4
